The Paducah Sun from Paducah, Kentucky (2024)

a The Paducah Sun Sunday, March 26, 2000 5C NATION Ministers accused of fleecing their flock Associated Press COLUMBIA, S.C. Two ministers have been charged with money laundering and fraud, accused of taking more than $7 million from their followers in an investment scheme with links overseas. The Rev. Johnny William "Bill" Cabe, 40, and the Rev. Shelton Joel Shirley, 48, each faces 16 counts of money laundering and nine counts of wire fraud.

The pastors, operating under the missionary program Hisway Ministries, took money from investors from January to August 1998, offering returns of up to 500 percent in three months, according to the indictment. One investor said although he had forgiven the ministers, he still wanted to see them punished. "I feel bad for them, but at the same time I want to see justice served," Don Calhoun said. "I want my money Calhoun said he and his wife invested $30,000 with Cabe and Shirley, hoping to pay off their debts quickly. Other investors lived in Tennessee, Pennsylvania, Michigan and Washington, D.C., the indictment said.

Thinking their money would be used for missionary work and in investments to make a profit, churchgoers gave $3.6 million to Cabe and Shirley, Assistant U.S. Attorney Dean Eichelberger said. Other investors added more than $4 million. Cabe, who was arrested by federal agents in York on Friday morning, appeared in court a few hours later. After hearing the charges against him and his partner, Cabe motioned toward prosecutors and said, "I want to help them.

We're not the bad Also indicted was a London antiques dealer, Terrence Stanley Victor Wingrove, 58. He is charged with 17 counts of wire fraud and 14 counts of money laundering. Prosecutors said Wingrove took money from Cabe, Shirley and other investors and spent more than $12 million on art work and antiques. Prosecutors said Wingrove had been arrested in London and they were attempting to extradite him to South Carolina. Divorcing couple to keep embryos frozen 50 years Associated Press CHICAGO A divorcing couple has agreed to keep the embryos that they produced frozen for another 50 years.

Margaret Hale, a nurse at Lutheran General Hospital, and her former husband, Dr. Todd Ginestra, have settled their divorce out of court, said Hale's attorney Michael Shevick. Hale has said her Roman Catholic faith prompted her desire to be impregnated with the embryos, created with genetic material from both partners, despite their separation. Ginestra, a resident plastic surgeon at the University of Illinois Hospital, had indicated he wanted the embryos destroyed as part of the divorce. Hale is "happy to have this resolved in a way that preserves the embryos," Shevick said.

The couple reached an agreement Friday with Highland Park Hospital in which the hospital will continue to keep the embryos frozen and viable until 2050, Shevick said. At that time, the embryos' fate will be the hospital's decision, he said. "The idea was to put the control back i in the hands of parties and away from the court," Shevick said. Attorneys previously said the touchy case could go all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court.

The embryos can only be removed from storage earlier than 2050 if both parties consent, Shevick said. Highland Park Hospital is also paying Hale and Ginestra an undisclosed sum of money to prevent a future lawsuit, he said. Ginestra's attorney, James A. Schaefer, said he was happy that some sort of agreement could be reached. He characterized the couple's attitudes on the issue as being "diametrically opposed." DEATHS Helen Culver LA CENTER, Ky.

Clinton scolds Pakistan over nuclear arms Associated Press ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Amid extraordinary security of decoy limousines and a lastminute plane switch, President Clinton admonished Pakistan's military ruler Saturday for a "tragic squandering of effort, energy and wealth" on nuclear weapons and confrontations with India. But Clinton's appeal for restraint seemed to go unheeded. "Take the right steps now to prevent escalation, avoid miscalculation and reduce the risk of war." the president urged. He prodded Gen. Pervez Musharraf to restore democracy, crack down on terrorism and renew talks with India to ease their angry standoff over the Himalayan territory of Kashmir.

Clinton was the first U.S. president to visit Pakistan since 1969 and he brought a sobering warning of diplomatic isolation and worsening problems unless Islamabad changes course. It was a hard message for a nation that stood loyally with the United States through a half century of Cold War crises. The president spelled out his concerns in a meeting at the presidential palace with Musharraf, who took power in a bloodless coup last October. Then, Clinton made an address on state-run television, asking citizens to consider whether a nuclear rivalry and border tensions with India will make Pakistan safer or improve living conditions.

"The answer to all these questions is no," he declared. Security around Clinton was the tightest of any presidential trip in memory. Streets were eerily empty except for thousands of rifle-toting soldiers and police. The president flew to Pakistan in an unmarked white Gulfstream jet after a carefully staged ruse at his departure from Bombay, India. White House press secretary Joe Lockhart said he was unaware of any specific security threat in Pakistan but said it is in a dangerous neighborhood.

Driver aims car at kids: police Associated Press BLOOMINGTON, 111. A 20-year-old Bloomington man is accused of trying to ram his car into a group of children after they would not let him join them on their trampoline. "He asked if he could jump on the trampoline with them, and they told him no because they couldn't speak to strangers," said Cecilia Ruffin, mother of three of the children involved in Thursday's incident. Christopher Goff, 20, was charged Friday with four counts of attempted murder and one count of criminal damage to property. Police said he became enraged at the children, most of whom were younger than 10 years old, and started yelling at them.

He then allegedly got in his vehicle, revved the engine, peeled the tires and aimed his car directly at the trampoline, police said. A chain-link fence stopped Goff's car from hitting the children, and Goff drove off, police said. One girl suffered a bump on her head when she fell while fleeing Goff's car. METROPOLIS, III.
